I would like to be able to Javascript the webpage back button to exit to the conversation, instead of using a lock on the conversation that opens up once the webpage has been viewed. But, there doesn't seem to be a field in which I can put Javascript in the webpage editor.

Instead of the body of the line including a hyperlink, you can use a "choice" to go to a "webpage" ARIS object. Create the webpage object with the url you want to the player to find.

This will at least link straight to the webpage.

I'd like to be able to put hyperlinks into lines of a conversation so that players can visit a page and then return to where they were in the conversation. Right now, we have basic <html> in our conversation (<a href="">text</a>), which returns the underlined text, but the link itself is not functional - it doesn't go anywhere.

Does anyone know if it's possible to do this? Or is it only possible to put hyperlinks in plaques?

Thanks,

Jeremy

I am familiar with the locks system and my team and I have been using locks to make plaques or conversations appear when X is satisfied. We have also used the "player has not yet" lock to make plaques and conversations disappear at some point in the game. I believe, then, our problem is at the beginning of the game, where we have not implemented this, but only a linear set of locks. We will give this a try! We didn't think elements had to disappear in order for player not to restart from the beginning. Makes more sense now!

This should solve our issue! Thanks again!

Are you familiar with locks and their use? In ARIS, everything is always available, there is no sense of order, until you start using locks.

For instance I have a trigger to a conversation that I only want the player to go through once. Then I put a lock on that trigger to be (there are a few options of exactly what you do, but this is one) "player has not yet exited _this_ conversation". In general, a lock like "player has not yet ...(whatever you want to lock)" will disappear something after its seen.

This statement is true when the player starts the game, and that is the key that opens the lock, making the trigger accessible. Once the player goes through the conversation though (until they reset their progress), the statement is false and so the key no longer works and the trigger is locked away.

You can also use locks within conversations if you want so that the player, upon rejoining, won't see conversation parts they've been through. But in practice, it's usually easier and simpler to create separate conversations, and then to use locks on their trigger s to order them appropriately.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Regarding the problem with the "continue" button, what is happening now is that we play the game and, for example, finish a conversation or a plaque, and then exit. However, when we re-enter the game and click "continue" we restart at the very beginning. Ideally, we would like the players to start exactly where they left off, or close.

Thank you for your other two suggestions, I will try those!

Joannie

Thank you for the reply! That's exactly what I'm trying to do. Except, at the moment, what I want to do is to create an AR trigger to a plaque. So, once the player views the media overlay in the AR tab, they will automatically be sent to a plaque. Basically, the step that I'm missing is creating the trigger itself that will send them to the plaque once they have tapped the media. Any insight on how I can create that would be much appreciated :)

Thanks,

Jeremy

Titles giving the plot away - what I do is to title them something that means something or is unique internally but which is not a literally obvious title to the player, like "mysterious stranger", or to strip out or change the titles before going live. The one place in ARIS where the author has an extra note to keep track is in character names. The "name in editor" never shows to the player, but does identify the character in the sidebar of the editor.

Reset - the easiest way for players is to force quit ARIS, then reset upon entering. It seems a bit drastic, but at least most iOS users are familiar (maybe too much so) with force quitting apps. I wonder but do not know if there might be an ARISJS way to do better. Certainly you could give them a tab that sends them back to the game picker, removing one level or so of menu clutter. Even though it sometimes is good to have this handy, for others, resetting would be heartbreak (say my high score in Rupee Collector).

Player switches to the AR tab in ARIS
Player holds up device and camera recognizes AR media, Vuforia replaces this image in screen with some other media
Player taps recognized area on screen and ARIS moves player to the game object (like a conversation) linked in the editor to the AR target.

So if you've already tried to link this conversation to the AR target in ARIS (make an AR trigger for the conversation in question), likely all that you need to do in testing is to tap on the screen when recognizing the image.

In the game we made using AR, we definitely had to train our players to do this. The first image had big text in it that read "tap the screen to continue"
