    ARIS on Android

    by djgagnon » Fri Dec 16, 2016 10:08 pm

A bunch of us are pretty excited about getting going with ARIS on Android. Scott Morison at University of Oregon CASLS lab, led by Julie Sykes, has been releasing version ofter version to the public GitHub repo over the last year. There are limitations to the android version.

The ARIS Android app code is substantially complete. It is capable of loading and playing most games with fairly straightforward common requirements including, maps, items, plaques, dialogs, and web page views. Scanner, Decoder and Notebook tabs are stubbed in but not functional. the Quests tab is in place, but not tested. Sound media does not appear to be working.

At this point the app is quite runnable, again, for simple game demonstrations, but do note that very little QA has been applied to this very raw collection of source code, and there WILL be bugs.

Please feel free to test to your heart's content and send feedback on bugs, missing features, strange behaviors, etc.

That means you can get it RIGHT NOW. Here are the steps:

    1. Goto https://github.com/ARISGames/aris-android-client and clone or download the code as a .zip

    2. Download the Android Studio from https://developer.android.com/studio/index.html

    3. Open the ARIS project in Studio and build it with your device attached. See https://developer.android.com/studio/run/device.html for more details.

For feedback, go ahead and type your issues right into GitHub at https://github.com/ARISGames/aris-android-client/issues

This sounds like good news... I am just seeing this post today. Am downloading Android studio currently so questions may be answered soon, but here's a stupid question: we build ARIS games in Android studio or in the ARIS editor? Are current ARIS games portable into Android studio or do they have to be rebuilt from scratch in parallel?

Thanks for everyone's work on this.

I'm sure I'm just supremely ignorant of something obvious to most, but I get an extraction error when I try to unzip the downloaded zipped/cloned ARIS bundle and am uncertain how to access this in the Android Studio...

I guess I really don't understand what to do re: Step 3 above and would be grateful for any guidance.
